This programme is a valuable way of supporting the NQT +1 colleagues in your school through the use of some of your Education Recovering funding. This programme has been designed in response to the challenging two years that this cohort of teachers have experienced in terms of training and NQT experience.

These sessions are designed to offer invaluable support to NQT+1 and allow them to explore how they can embed strong teaching and learning practices within their classroom, consider where their career path may go and also how they can use academic research to continue their understanding of pedagogy and how it can impact their professional development.

The twilights will take place from 4pm to 5.30pm and will be delivered either virtually or face to face in accordance with COVID guidelines at the time.  Details will be sent before each session.

Who is this course for?

Recently qualified teachers (NQT+1s).

The course is aimed at those who have successfully completed their NQT induction and are now working within schools, but without the mentoring framework so valued by NQTs.

Attendance to all of the following 8 sessions is ideal however we understand that committing to all 8 may be prohibitive.  Please contact laura.lusardi@albantsh.co.uk if you wish to discuss a more flexible package.

Outline of each session:

Session 2: Teaching Shape/Space/Geometry
This session will look at what is expected of students at KS3 in terms of shape and space, how to make sense of length/area/volume formulae and units. We will also look at the power of examples and non-examples for helping students understand definitions and pre-empting misconceptions.
Session 3: Removing the mysteries of scientific Casio calculators & Teaching Data/Probability
Introduction to the use of scientific Casio calculators, suitable for non-specialist maths teachers and teaching assistants.
We will also look at some of the data and probability work which comes up at KS3 and how students can take a practical and active approach in lessons to understanding these concepts
Session 4: Teaching Algebra
This session will build on the foundations from the rest of the course to look at some of the Algebra that is taught at KS3 and beyond and how you can help students understand it with a series of questions involving minimal variations which provoke discussion

Reporting instructions will be emailed to you a few days before each session and sessions will take place either virtually or face to face in accordance with COVID guidelines at the time.

Meet the facilitator

Rebecca Bradbury, Curriculum Leader for REP (Religion, Ethics and Philosophy), St Albans Girls’ School

I trained with Teach First in 2012 and began my career in a mixed gender school in Enfield, London. Since then, I have held different positions in schools varying in nature including teaching in Beijing, China. I have worked in a variety of roles including Head of Year, Boarding Housemistress, Co-ordinator of Mental Health and Wellbeing and I have been the Curriculum Leader for REP (Religion, Ethics and Philosophy) at St Albans Girls’ School for 2 years. I have also been an RE GCSE examiner for the majority of my career.

I am passionate about creating an academically rigorous RE curriculum which allows learners to develop their theological, ethical and philosophical literacy as well as exploring their own relationship with the world around them. I believe our subject is on par with other academic subjects such as History and Geography and should therefore be planned for and treated as such.
