Training
What does a Year 1 ECT do?
As a Year 1 ECT, you will be entitled to a 10% reduction in your teaching timetable. This time is protected to enable you to complete self study using the NIoT platform ‘Prism’ and other development activities. You will attend face to face training events half termly which are called ‘Local Seminars’ and are a chance to meet other ECTs from your region. Once a term you will also be invited to attend an online webinar with a national expert. In addition, you will meet every week with your mentor who will support you through observations and deliberate practice.
What does a Year 2 ECT do?
A Year 2 ECT will have a 5% reduction in teaching which supports you in moving towards a full teaching load whilst still providing protected time for some continued self study through BPNs platform ‘Canvas’. You will continue to attend face to face training sessions and will complete a practitioner inquiry in the last few months of your induction period. You will also receive bi-weekly mentor meetings to provide ongoing support.
What does mentor training involve?
Mentors will undertake a one year programme of training with the NIoT. Enhanced mentor support will be given through comprehensive training which develops coaching expertise and builds on the deliberate practice model. Mentors will access phase-specific resources through self study via ‘Prism’, and will also attend three expert face to face sessions to support ECT development effectively.

FAQs
- How will I be assessed? The Early Career Teacher Entitlement is part of Continuing Professional Development, (CPD). Therefore, it is not assessed; the induction process is separate and the responsibility of the school and the appropriate body.
- What happens if I can not attend one of my training sessions? Please contact us so that we can arrange for you to attend an alternative session. Recordings will only be made available as a last resort.
- What happens if I change school part way through the ECF? ECTs are able to move school at any time during or after their induction. Every effort will be made for you to remain on the same induction programme where appropriate.
- What happens if I am a part-time ECT? The standard length of ECT induction training is typically two years. However, the Alban TSH will support you to serve the full-time equivalent of two full school years to provide sufficient teaching practice time to apply training and demonstrate the standards. The part-time routes offered will give the opportunity to engage with the programme at an appropriate and proportionate rate.
