SENCO Leadership Coaching Support

Alban Education in collaboration with Debbie Shirley, from Flourish with Debbie, is delighted to offer a new six session programme of coaching support for SENCo’s and their teams. The programme is designed to enable SENCos to reflect and build on their leadership skills, manage workload and the unique pressures that the role attracts.

Your bespoke programme can start on a date that suits you and will run for 12 months following commencement.

Programme Outline

Six sessions in total with the first three sessions being one-to-one coaching sessions focusing on the SENCo lead role, deepening their knowledge of their values and leadership skills and building a strong vision for their team. Then a further 3 group sessions including the wider inclusion team are developed, to enable the sharing of that vision and enabling capacity to grow within the team.

The unique aspect of this support is that a bespoke and thoughtful programme of coaching can be built to meet the school’s leadership needs. The programme is suitable for Primary and Secondary settings.

The sessions can be held half termly to maximise impact over the academic year.

  • Are you a new SENCo or are you managing a new team?
  • Are you an experienced SENCo whose role is adapting to changes in demands?
  • Are the external pressures of specialist provision and outreach, changing the way in which you work?
  • Do others understand your changing role?

This programme of coaching will enable you to reflect on your leadership role within school, how this is communicated to others, and how you manage others within your team to support your overall vision.

Meet the facilitator

Debbie Shirley is a Life and Leadership Coach and supports leaders through her coaching business ‘Flourish with Debbie’. She has experience of working in educational leadership for the last 18 years in Hertfordshire and has established herself as a Leadership Coach, qualifying with a Level 5 Diploma in Performance Coaching with Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP). Debbie is a Leadership Performance Coach for NPQH as well as an Inclusion Quality Mark Assessor and Ambassador.

How is it delivered?

Delivery includes:

  • Termly start dates
  • 18-months on programme with up to 3-month End Point Assessment
  • Monthly training events, face-to-face or online
  • Weekly check-ins with Apprenticeship Tutor
  • 6-weekly reviews with Apprenticeships Tutor and Employer

What are the benefits?

The Level 5 Early Years Lead Practitioner (EYLP) Apprenticeship is ideal for proactive, influential practitioners, working directly with children. These highly skilled professionals take an operational lead for the care, learning and development of all young children within their care and lead and support the practice of others. It is an excellent progression route for practitioners who hold a level 2 or level 3 qualification in Early Years; this course will progress and enhance their practice and knowledge.

Early Years Lead Practitioner apprentices learn how to:

  • Adapt to individual needs providing inclusive and holistic provision
  • Be responsible for supporting the quality of learning and development in their setting
  • Promote the health and well-being of all children through learning rich environments
  • Engage with sector developments both locally and nationally
  • Skilfully lead day-to-day practice at an operational level and disseminate best practice
  • Safeguard and promote the health, safety and welfare of children
  • Work in partnership with the key person, colleagues, parents and/or carers or other professionals
  • Be a reflective practitioner, enhancing skills and knowledge to improve pedagogical practice

Early Years Educator apprentices learn how to:

  • Support and promote children’s early education and development
  • Plan and provide effective care, teaching and learning that enables children to progress and prepares them for school
  • Make accurate and productive use of assessment
  • Develop effective and informed practice
  • Safeguard and promote the health, safety and welfare of children
  • Work in partnership with the key person, colleagues, parents and/or carers or other professionals
  • And you’re entitled to a TOTUM student discount card

On successful completion of your apprenticeship, you will be awarded the Level 3 Early Years Educator Apprenticeship, the NCFE Diploma for the Early Years Workforce (EYE), and the Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid OR Level 3 Award Emergency Paediatric First Aid. The early years educator level 3 standard meets the early years educator (EYE) criteria. Apprentices will achieve an EYE qualification which has been approved to count towards the EYFS level 3 child: staff ratios.

An Early Years Practitioner (EYP) works in a range of early years settings delivering the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) including; full daycare, children’s centres, playgroups, pre-schools, nursery schools, reception classes, home-based provision.

EYPs work under the guidance and supervision of an Early Years Educator, teacher or other suitably qualified professional in the Early Years Workforce supporting the planning and delivery of the educational programmes for children in the 0-5 age range.

Early Years Practitioners work with and care for children from birth to 5 years. They play a massive role in supporting children to have the best start to their education. Research shows disadvantaged children are four months behind at age 5, 10 months behind by the age of 11, and 19 months behind when they reach 16. As an Early Years specialist, you will personally help to close the gap and increase the life chances of the children you work with.

Upon successful completion of this qualification, learners can enter the workforce as a qualified Level 2 Early Years Practitioner or continue to study for a Level 3 Diploma holding Early Years Educator status including the Early Years Educator apprenticeship.
