Presented by experienced education consultant Carmel Bones this engaging workshop organised by Alban Education showcases versatile techniques which take cognitive science into account and can be adapted to suit your subject, your students and their starting points.

This webinar will take place at 4pm on Thursday, 23rd June and will explore the importance, benefits and power of careful questioning in the classroom.

Carmel will demonstrate how to:

  • Develop better daily questioning habits and routines.
  • Involve your learners more in the questioning process taking account of breath and depth by increasing the participation and thinking ratios.
  • Avoid common questioning pitfalls.

This webinar session will make you think, get creative and apply the ideas to your own setting. There will be easily implementable practical take-aways to crank up the power of questioning.

Meet the Facilitator

Carmel Bones is thrilled to return to deliver sessions for Alban Education. She works extensively in schools across the UK with groups of teachers, departments, multi academy trusts and local authorities focusing on all aspects of learning and teaching real and remote.

In 2020 she was listed in the prestigious Edtech50 for her innovative work bringing the historic environment to life through virtual visits as part of teacher and student webinars. Her highly acclaimed new Key Stage 3 series ‘Explain This’ for BBC Teach explaining key concepts launched in April 2020. She is an Honorary fellow of the Historical Association. She formed part of the national BBC Daily Bitesize lockdown team producing tailored content for home learning. At Key Stage 4 her secondary content work with Clickview and Hodder was nominated for the Bett Awards 2020 and Teach Secondary Awards 2020. Her work on curriculum innovation was published in Teaching History Magazine Dec 2021 and she was appointed to the Reteach Content Board. She has been working with the British Library to develop a digital teachers pack to run alongside their exhibition 2021-2 Royal Cousins, Rival Queens. In 2022 she has 2 new BBC Bitesize GCSE History series launching and is honoured to be speaking and hosting at the World Education Summit in March and the Historical Association National Conference in May.

Carmel co-authored the Amazon best-selling Hodder ‘My Revision Notes’ for GCSE History AQA and OCR B GCSE. In addition, she has been an A’ Level and GCSE examiner working on the ‘Inside Exams’ podcast with AQA and is a trainer and team leader on the Osiris Teaching Intervention.

Professional Clerk to Governor Development Programme 2021-22

Please note booking is required at least 24 hours before the event and numbers will be restricted to 16 delegates and will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

Alban Education is delighted to offer this new programme for both new and experienced clerks to develop their role so that they can contribute effectively to governance at their school or academy trust. New clerks will develop their understanding of clerking and develop essential knowledge and skills, whilst experienced clerks will be able to enhance and develop their competencies and expertise.

The programme will consist of four online modules which will be delivered from 09.30hrs to 12.00hrs on the following rescheduled dates (not commencing 22 March and 3 May re-scheduled).

  • Friday, 29th April 2022
  • Friday, 6th May 2022
  • Tuesday, 7th June 2022
  • Tuesday, 5th July 2022

About the Programme

Delegates will complete inter-session research and activities to put their learning into practice, will reflect on learning throughout the programme, and experience peer support and sharing of practice with other clerks. The following will be explored:

  • Understanding Governance and the role of the clerk
  • Administration, advice and guidance
  • People and relationships
  • Panels and Evaluation of Programme, learning and impact

All materials will be emailed to delegates ahead of each module.

New and experienced clerks.

How will my Board benefit?

The programme is framed around the Clerking Competency Framework. This identifies the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to provide professional clerking to the governing boards of maintained schools, academies and multi-academy trusts.

Meet the Facilitator

Mark Coppel 

Mark is a National Leader of Governance and delivers external reviews and support for schools and academy trusts through the National Leaders for Governance programme, on behalf of the NGA.

Mark is also an NGA consultant and delivers sessions for NGA Training and Consultancy and facilitated on the NGA Leading Governance development programmes for chairs, clerks and boards. He has delivered the clerk’s development programme for several teaching schools.

Mark’s background is in technology management, and he has taught at Sheffield University Management School, including on the MBA, as well as working as an independent consultant. Under the Labour government’s flagship creativity and culture programme for education, he facilitated and evaluated creative partnerships projects.

Mark has been working in education since 2006 as a consultant and trainer, working with local authorities, multi academy trusts and a teaching school alliance.

Mark’s governance experience includes chairing multiple schools

including interim executive boards – taking schools from special measures to good, being a trustee and member of a MAT, being the member of several transition boards, and chairing a special school’s governing board.
